TYPE LOCALITY: Papua New Guinea, Chimbu Prov., N slopes Mt Wilhelm, 9000- 10,000 ft .
DISTRIBUTION: Papua New Guinea; scattered localities from Mt Wilhelm east to highlands of Wau region (see map in Flannery, 1990b:l 80).
COMMENTS: Phallic morphology similar to that characterizing Mayermys (Lidicker, 1968) . Certain derived cranial and dental features unite Neohydromys , Mayermys , and Pseudohydromys as close relatives (e.g., all share the derived pattern of cephalic arterial circulation; Musser and Heaney, 1992).
