Aglaja Renier, 1807 : pl. 8. Type species: Aglaja tricolorata Renier, 1807 [Recent, Mediterranean and northeastern Atlantic], by subsequent designation of Suter (1913).

Synonym:

Doridium Meckel, 1809: 33 . Type species: Doridium membranaceum Meckel, 1809 [= Aglaja tricolorata Renier, 1807 ; Recent, Mediterranean and northeastern Atlantic], by subsequent designation of Gray (1847) (suppressed by ICZN 1977).

DIAGNOSIS. — Shell morphology. Shell internal, completely calcified, with only 1 whorl visible. Columella simple, reduced. Operculum absent.

Anatomy. Cephalic shield lobed or rounded. Posterior shield with 2 lobes and normally with a flagellum. Head with a single pair of sensory processes. Dorsal and ventral labial glands present. Gill simple. Radula and jaws absent. Buccal mass large and muscular. Reproductive system monaulic, with the seminal receptacle proximal to the genital atrium. Mucous gland with a single lobe. Hermaphrodite duct with a branch connecting to the albumen and mucous glands. Penis unarmed, simple or complex.

REMARKS. — The name Aglaja Renier, 1807 has been placed on the Official List of Names in Zoology by Opinion 1079 (ICZN 1977). Gosliner (1980) revised the characteristics of Aglaja and provided a list of species and a diagnosis of the genus. The diagnosis above is based on the work of Gosliner (1980).

Several synonyms have been proposed for Aglaja . Of these, only Doridium Meckel, 1809 , type species Doridium membranaceum Meckel, 1809 , which is a synonym of Aglaja tricolorata Renier, 1807 , is maintained here in the synonymy of this genus. However, this name was suppressed by Opinion 1079 (ICZN 1977). Posterobranchaea d’Orbigny, 1837 was based on the type species Posterobranchaea maculata d’Orbigny, 1837 , which was regarded by Gosliner (1980) as a nomen oblitum belonging to Navanax Pilsbry, 1895 . Lobaria Müller, 1776 , type species Lobaria quadriloba Müller, 1776 , is a synonym of Philine (see above).
