Gastropteron Kosse, 1813: 10-16 , figs 11-14. Type species: Gasteropteron coccineum Férussac, 1822 [= Gastropteron rubrum (Rafinesque, 1814) ; Recent, Mediterranean], by subsequent monotypy.

Synonym:

Sarcopterus Rafinesque, 1814: 11 . Type species: Sarcopterus ruber Rafinesque, 1814 [Recent, Mediterranean], by monotypy.

DIAGNOSIS. — Shell morphology. Shell internal, reduced or absent.

Anatomy. Body oval, with a cephalic shield and 2 large wing-like expansions attached to the sides of the foot. Gill external, on the right side of the body. Jaws with simple elements. Radula with large outermost teeth and simple, hamate inner teeth.

REMARKS. — The genus Gastropteron was described by Kosse (1813) with no included species. Subsequently, Férussac (1821-22) first included the single nominal species coccinium in the genus Gastropteron (misspelled Gasteropteron ), which thereby became the type species by subsequent monotypy. Blainville (1825) recognized that Sarcopterus Rafinesque, 1814 is a synonym of Gastropteron .

The systematics of the genus Gastropteron and its phylogenetic relationships with Sagaminopteron Tokioka & Baba, 1964 , Enotepteron Minichev, 1967 and Siphopteron Gosliner, 1989 were studied by Gosliner (1989). The diagnosis above was extracted from Gosliner’s (1989) monograph.
