Tepoztequiella rhizoidea Núñez-Resendiz, Dreckmann & Sentíes

Thallus cartilaginous, dark red, 20–30 cm in length, with cylindrical axes in cross section, 360–550 μm in diameter.Main axes branching irregularly to pseudo-dichotomously, branches with smooth surfaces ( Fig. 30 View FIGURES 28–38. 28–29 ). Multiaxial organization with a filamentous medulla and a pseudoparenchymatous cortex ( Fig. 31 View FIGURES 28–38. 28–29 ). Medullary filaments produced from cells of the inner cortex, 1.3–2.5 μm in diameter, with many simple single-cell rhizoids. Inner cortex with six layers of stellate or rounded cells, 13–16.5 μm and 40-70 x 60-100 μm in diameter, respectively, also with numerous rhizoids. Outer cortex with two layers of cells, small, pigmented, elongated, 5–7 μm x 2.5–4.0 μm in diameter. Tetrasporangia elongated, claviform, zonately divided, 16–25 μm long and 5–11.5 μm in diameter, embedded in the cortical cells, arising basally from an elongated support cell ( Fig. 32 View FIGURES 28–38. 28–29 ).
