Why the syenitica type is not Oenanthe leucura

That the syenitica type belongs to the lugens complex and not to leucura is indicated by its relatively more pointed wing shape with p3 (primary number 3, counted ascendently) the longest primary (not pp3–4 or pp3– 5 as in leucura ), by its long p2 (p2 = ~p6, instead of p2 = p6/7 or p7 as in leucura ), by its relatively short first primary (p1> primary-coverts c. 2.5 mm; in contrast both races of leucura have p1> 4–11 mm, usually 7 mm or longer), and by lack of a clear emargination on p6 (usually well-developed in leucura ). Also like taxa in the lugens complex (but unlike leucura ), the type of syenitica has both white fringes to the inner webs of the remiges and some retained whitish tips to the juvenile primary-coverts. Furthermore, its main measurements, wing (90.5 mm), tail (59.0 mm) and bill (17.0 mm), are too small for leucura , and better fit O. lugens sensu lato.
