Genus Nuuanu Barnard, 1970 View in CoL

(Korean Name: Nu-a-nu-yeop-sae-u-sok, new)

Diagnosis

Head, anterior lobe developed, subrectangular or subtriangular in shape; anteroventral notch mostly developed; eyes rudimentary or absent. Antenna 1, accessory flagellum present, mostly tri-articulate. Gnathopods 1 and 2 subchelate, dissimilar in size and shape. Gnathopod 1, anteroventral corner of merus subacutely produced. Pereopod 7 longer than pereopod 5; basis posteriorly expanded and shield-like, posterior margin crenulate. Pleonites 1 and 2 with dorsal spines. Pleonal epimeron 1, anteroventral corner mostly round or acutely produced forward. Urosomite 1 without dorsal keel. Uropod 1, peduncle with basofacial spine mostly. Uropod 3 parviramous, outer ramus short and inner ramus small to minute, always less than half length of outer; outer ramus bi-articulate, distal article very short if present. Telson deeply or fully cleft (modified from Senna and Serejo 2012).

Remarks

Lowry and Watson (2002) revised the genus level of ‘ gammarellid group ’ and then suggested the hypothesis of phylogenetic relationship between the species included in Nuuanu and Gammarella . In this previous report, Nuuanu was discriminated from Gammarella by several plesiomorphies, such as the absence of well-developed dorsal keel on urosomite, the poorly developed eyes and the small body size ( Lowry and Watson 2002). Later, Lowry and Watson ’ s ‘ gammarellid group ’ was established as the Nuuanuidae by Lowry and Myers (2013), but the perspective of classification between Nuuanu and Gammarella is still valid.
