Material examined. 4 ex. Spring water on the mountain next to the Limestone Kiln Reservoir , Lime Kiln Village , Qilin District, Qujing City, Yunnan Province, China; 25.42°N, 103.68°E, June 2023 by Hao Li leg. GoogleMaps

Holotype. NNUH20240201 , Shell height 16.64 mm, width 6.87 mm, height of the body whorl 8.78 mm.

Paratypes. 3 ex. NNUH20240202–4 , Shell height 12.73–13.77 mm, width 5.49–6.29 mm, height of the body whorl 7.41–8.05 mm, locality and habitat same as holotype .

Locus typicus. Lime Kiln Village, Qilin District, Qujing City, Yunnan Province, China; 25.42°N, 103.68°E.

Etymology. The specific name " penicillata " is derived from pencil, the shell of this snail resembles the shape of a pencil. We suggest the Chinese common name as " fflƭ华ĸ ".

Description. Shell small, thick, solid, elongated conical, coffee, with black band; shell comprising eight whorls, surface near smooth, growth lines obvious, without spiral ribs, usually containing calcareous attachments, body whorl swollen, taking up most of the shell about 41%, with very faint transverse lines. Apex eroded. Suture low. Aperture ovate, lip thin, inner lip slightly thickened and smooth, white, outer lip grey. Umbilicus absent.

Operculum. ( Fig. 2 G View Figure 2 ) Ovate, smaller than aperture, corneous, thin, brown, length 3.15 mm, width 2.16 mm, and the nucleus located at the bottom left about 1/4.

Radula. ( Fig. 3 G View Figure 3 ) Central teeth with triangle-shaped pointed major cusp, and 3–4 smaller cusps on each side. Lateral teeth with pointed major cusp, and 2–3 smaller cusps on each side. Inner marginal teeth with nine to ten and outer with six to seven flattened, rounded denticles.

Anatomy. Snout, foot and tentacles grey. Snout broad, squarish, with long cephalic tentacles, tentacles roughly greater than snout in length.

Remarks. Inner marginal teeth have 9–10 smaller cusps on inner side of H. penicillata sp. nov., which is a significant feature that distinguishes other Hua species. H . penicillata sp. nov. is most similar to H. tchangsii and H. intermedia , but can nevertheless be easily separated by more elongated shell, and lateral teeth have 9–10 smaller cusps (vs. H. intermedia have five smaller cusps and H. tchangsii have four smaller cusps). The new species can also be clearly distinguished from other Hua congeners by the following features: shell smooth (vs. shell sculptured in H. jacqueti and H. textrix ), more whorls (vs. H. telonaria and H. vultuosa ).

Habitat and distribution. This species was collected in Spring water on the mountain next to the Limestone Kiln Reservoir, Qilin District, Qujing City, Yunnan Province. The species inhabits rivers with a depth of less than 30 cm, slow water flow, and a substrate made of stones and sand.
