Distribution. West Atlantic: Mexico, Honduras, S Lesser Antilles, Panama (Portobelo), Colombia and Venezuela ( Gore 1982; Rodríguez et al. 2005; Poupin 2018).

Ecology. Subtidal, presently known depth range: 0–20 m, likely deeper; under rocks, or facultatively associated with “large holothurians” ( Werding 1977, 1978b; Gore 1982; Poupin 2018).

Remarks. Petrolisthes magdalenensis is a scarcely recorded western Atlantic species closely related to the eastern Pacific P. lewisi , the two species being in sister position ( Gore 1982; Rodríguez et al. 2005, 2006; see also Werding & Hiller 2005). According to Werding (1977), the species has a very characteristic colouration: the colour of the carapace and P1 varies from light grey to yellowish, frequently with brownish spots; the P2–P4 are brown, darker distally; and the P1 is brownish distally. A specimen from Utila, Honduras, tentatively identified by us as P. magdalenensis based on its overall morphology and colouration, is illustrated ( Fig. 62 ) to ease the species’ identification.
