Material examined. Panama [Caribbean]: 1 male, cl 4.3, cw 3.8, 1 ov. female, cl 3.6, cw 3.5 ( MZUSP 33690 View Materials ), Bocas del Toro , Isla Colón, Punta Caracol, shallow flat with fragmented coral rubble, large coral rocks and seagrass, depth 0.5–2 m, under and within coral rubble, leg. A. Anker, J. Luque, A.R. Palmer & T. Kaji, 27.04.2015; 1 male, cl 6.2, cw 5.4 ( MZUSP 33895 View Materials ), Bocas del Toro , Isla Colón, Boca del Drago, shallow flat with seagrass and coral rubble and coral rocks, depth 0.5–2 m, leg. A. Anker, J. Luque, A.R. Palmer & T. Kaji, 01.05.2015; 1 ov. female, cl 5.2, cw 5.1 ( MZUSP 33530 View Materials ), west of Portobelo , depth 0.5–1.5 m, fringing reef, in coral rocks and under rocks, leg. A. Anker & J.F. Lazarus-Agudelo, 26.03.2015; 2 males, cl 4.7, cw 4.3 and cl 4.3, cw 4.0 ( MZUSP 33554 View Materials ), same collection data as for previous specimen .

Previous records from Panama. Gore (1982); Rodríguez et al. (2005).

Distribution. West Atlantic: Belize, Panama (Bocas del Toro, Bahía Limón near Colón, Portobelo), Colombia and Brazil ( Gore 1982; Rodríguez et al. 2005; Ferreira & Melo 2016; Poupin 2018).

Ecology. Mainly subtidal, occasionally in the lower intertidal, known depth range: 0–35 m; mostly on coral reefs and adjacent habitats with abundance of coral rubble, rocks or calcareous algae ( Ferreira & Melo 2016; Poupin 2018; present study).

Remarks. Petrolisthes rosariensis is morphologically similar to P. galathinus , differing from the latter by the presence of two epibranchial teeth (vs. one epibranchial tooth in P. galathinus ); the lateral margin of the P1 propodus almost straight (vs. noticeably more convex in P. galathinus ); and the lack of a pubescence in the gape of the P1 fingers (Werding 1982; Ferreira & Melo 2016). The two species also differ in some aspects of the colour pattern (cf. Fig. 72 View FIGURE 72 and Figs. 46–48 View FIGURE 46 View FIGURE 47 View FIGURE 48 ; see also Werding 1982 for further details). The Brazilian specimen illustrated by Ferreira & Melo (2016: fig. 2H) is clearly discoloured after preservation in ethanol. Rodríguez et al. (2005) provided a lengthy discussion on some taxonomic issues with P. rosariensis , including typification and some disparities in the species’ diagnosis, which can be resolved only by re-examination of the original material of Werding (1977).

Hiller et al. (2006) recovered P. rosariensis as sister of Parapetrolisthes tortugensis ( Glassell, 1945) . This unexpected result may be somewhat incongruent with morphology of the adults, but seems to be partly supported by larval data. Therefore, Parapetrolisthes Haig, 1962 may soon be invalidated and P. tortugensis transferred back to Petrolisthes . Although P. tortugensis has not yet been found in Panama, its presence in Honduras ( Fig. 88B View FIGURE 88 ), Belize and Colombia strongly suggests that it also occurs on Panamanian offshore reefs and islands ( Table 1).
