Petrolisthes hians Nobili, 1901 View in CoL
( Fig. 57 View FIGURE 57 )
Petrolisthes hians Nobili 1901: 17 View in CoL ; Haig 1957: 7; Haig 1960: 121, pl. 22, fig. 3; Haig 1968: 67; Gore 1982: 14; Werding & Haig 1982: 67; Werding & Hiller 2005: 1189; Lazarus-Agudelo & Cantera-Kintz 2007: 230; García-Madrigal & Andréu- Sánchez 2009: 33, fig. 4A.
Material examined. Panama [Pacific]: 1 ov. female, cl 5.0, cw 5.1, 2 males, cl 3.5, cw 3.3 and cl 3.9, cw 3.7 ( MZUSP 33476 View Materials ), Río Mar , rocky intertidal, low tide, under rocks and in rock crevices, leg. A. Anker, J.F. Lazarus- Agudelo & T. Kaji, 20.03.2015 ; 1 ov. female, cl 3.8, cw 4.1 ( MZUSP 33785 View Materials ), Punta Mala, rocky intertidal, low tide, under large boulders, leg. A. Anker & J.F. Lazarus-Agudelo, 23.03.2015 .
Previous records from Panama. Haig (1960); Gore (1982).
Distribution. East Pacific: Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Panama (Secas Is., Punta Mala, Río Mar, vicinity of Ciudad de Panamá, Taboga Is., Las Perlas Is., Bahía Piña in Darién), Colombia and Ecuador ( Haig 1960; Gore 1982; present study).
Ecology. Intertidal and shallow subtidal, known depth range: 0–36 m; on exposed rocky shores; typically under rocks or in rock crevices, in “coralline and sponge-covered areas” ( Haig 1960; Gore 1982; present study).
Remarks. According to Haig (1960), P. hians is closely related to the western Atlantic P. jugosus Streets, 1872 (see below). These two species are the only species of the genus Petrolisthes with five (instead of seven) plates in the telson ( Werding & Hiller 2005). The general shape of the body and P1 of P. hians , as well as the colour pattern of the species, appear to be very characteristic ( Fig. 57 View FIGURE 57 ). The more uniform orange-reddish Mexican specimen illustrated by García-Madrigal & Andréu-Sánchez (2009) was probably photographed post-mortem, being almost completely discoloured.
