Porcellana paguriconviva Glassell, 1936 View in CoL

Porcellana paguriconviva Glassell 1936: 293 View in CoL ; Haig 1960: 200, fig. 9(3), pl. 38, fig. 1; Haig 1962: 185; Gore & Abele 1976: 26; García-Madrigal & Andréu-Sánchez 2009: 43.

Material examined. None.

Previous records from Panama. Haig (1968); Gore & Abele (1976); Gore (1982).

Distribution. East Pacific: Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica and Panama (Bahía Honda in Veraguas, vicinity of Ciudad de Panamá, including Amador Causeway and “Recife de Casa de Putas”, Taboga Is., Las Perlas Is.) ( Haig 1960, 1968; Gore & Abele 1976; Gore 1982).

Ecology. Mostly subtidal, although occasionally found in the lower intertidal, known depth range: 0–100 m; on mud, sand and shell bottoms, obligate symbiont of large hermit crabs of the genera Dardanus and Petrochirus ( Haig 1960; Gore 1982).

Remarks. Porcellana paguriconviva resembles the western Pacific P. pulchra Stimpson, 1858 , although in the latter species, the P1 carpus and palm and the P2–P4 are considerably longer and more slender than in P. paguriconviva ( Haig 1960) . To our knowledge, there are no colour photographs of P. paguriconviva , which according to Glassell’s (1936) quite detailed description must be a very brightly coloured porcelain crab, with the carapace bright lavender and ornamented with longitudinal stripes of orange colour (continued on the first three segments of the pleon); the P1 also bright lavender; the P2–P4 with a white spot on the propodi; and the ventral surface iridescent pinkish white.
