Comparison of G. kinzelbachi with G. davidi in the field

Of all Gomphus species occurring in the Western Palaearctic region G. kinzelbachi resembles most closely G. davidi . The colour patterns of these two species are very similar ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 A–H). G. kinzelbachi is clearly smaller than G. davidi .. Some details of the male appendices and secondary genitalia seen in the hand or on photographs are described below. The anterior hamule is longer in G. kinzelbachi compared to G. davidi , even seen on photographs of live animals ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 E, F). G. kinzelbachi females are clearly smaller than G. davidi females, as in males. Females of both species are very similar and cannot be distinguished by colour patterns ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 G, H).
