(Figs. 19, 24)

Diagnosis

Zorion nonmaculatum can be distinguished from all other Zorion species by the absence of the elytral spot in combination with the elytra having a purple brown central area with reddish brown shoulders and apices. The only other species, which might be found without elytral spots is Z. guttigerum , which differs from Z. nonmaculatum by having a unicoloured elytra.

Colour: Elytra purple brown with reddish brown shoulders and apices and no spot (Fig. 19). Head and pronotum dark reddish brown; labrum, mandibles, scape, pedicel, coxae, trochanter, femur, tibia and tarsi reddish brown. Antennal segments 3–8 whitish brown at base gradually darkening towards apex; antennal segments 9–11 dark brown. Femur whitish brown at base, club without dark ring as in Fig. 3 View FIGURES 1 – 3 . Pro and mesocoxal cavity bounded by dark edge. First two abdominal segments dark red brown, gradually becoming reddish brown from third to fifth visible abdominal segments.

Structure: Body surface glabrous, glossy. Elytra rounded at apex. Female with a row of hairs on epipleural fold.

Ovipositor and spermatheca: Ratio of dorsal to ventral baculi being 1:1.25. Spermatheca sclerotised, hookshaped, widest at base, more sclerotised at apex, spermathecal gland arising 0.33 of spermathecal length from base.

Biology

Adults were collected in mid January and no further information is available. John S. Dugdale in Feb. 2000 was not able to detect any specimens of this species during a visit to the D’Urville Islands.

Distribution

D’Urville Island ( Fig. 24 View FIGURE 24 ).

Etymology

The species name is derived from Latin and refers to the spotless, immacculate elytra.
