Type species: Empoascanara prima Distant, 1918 , by original designation

Description. Body small to medium sized. Ground color yellow or dirty yellow. Head wider or equal to pronotum. Eyes black. Vertex slightly produced medially, usually with one or pair of dark spots. Coronal suture distinct basally. Face dark, convex in profile, frontoclypeal area and lorum broad, anteclypeus ovoid. Forewing gray to brownish marked with pale to yellow, AA and AP vein usually invisible, first and third apical cell broad, fourth apical cell not extending to tip of wing, about half length of third cell. Hind wing transparent, RA vein present or not, submarginal vein (av) developed.

Abdominal apodemes short, only presented in sternite III. Anal tube without appendage.

Pygofer lobe with posterior margin varies among species, microtrichia scattered on caudal half and few microsetae on inner side of posterior margin. Subgenital plate constricted in the middle with around 3 macrosetae subbasally near outer margin, row of microsetae along outer margin. Style with apex short and robust in the most species, preapical lobe distinct. Connective V or Y-shaped, usually central lobe present. Aedeagus shaft tubular, location, shape, size and amount of appendages varies among species, gonopore subbasal to subapical on ventral surface.

Distribution. Oriental, Afrotropical, Australian and Palaearctic regions.
