Subfamily Arctoseiinae Evans, 1963

The subfamily was proposed by Evans (1963) with three included genera: Arctoseius Thor, 1930 ; Iphidozercon Berlese, 1903 ; and Zerconopsis Hull, 1918 . It was based on a reduced chaetotaxy of the genu and tibia of legs II to IV and the chaetotaxy of the opisthonotal region of the dorsal shield in the female. Subsequently, one more genus, Xenoseius Lindquist & Evans, 1965 was added along with a detailed description of the subfamily and a key to its genera ( Lindquist & Evans, 1965).

Recently the status of the former Ascidae was fundamentally reconsidered, and the family was divided into three families, namely Ascidae , Blattisociidae , and Melicharidae ( Lindquist et al., 2009; Moraes et al., 2016). The family Ascidae sensu stricto now includes 17 genera ( Moraes et al., 2016) distributed among two subfamilies, Ascinae (11 genera) and Arctoseiinae ( Lindquist & Makarova, 2012) . At present the subfamily Arctoseiinae comprises six genera and was recently enlarged to include Iphidonopsis Gwiazdowicz, 2004 and Maxinia Lindquist & Makarova, 2012 . The revised key ( Lindquist & Makarova, 2012) treated Iphidonopsis in the original sense ( Gwiazdowicz, 2004), not as in Gwiazdowicz, 2007. At the current level of knowledge on the subfamily composition, the genera Zerconopsis , Xenoseius and Iphidonopsis are closer to each other and constitute a separate tribe ( Makarova et al., 2021). The genus Xenoseius numbers three species ( Halliday et al., 1998), Iphidonopsis includes one-two species ( Ma & Yin, 1999; Gwiazdowicz, 2004; Makarova et al., 2021). Members of both genera are rather rare whereas Zerconopsis is much more common and diverse ( Moraes et al., 2016, Mesa Cobo et al., 2021) incorporating 19 known species including one under description.
