Description

Habitus ( Fig. 1B View Fig ). Length: 4.0–5.0 mm. Head with a similar colour to the body tegument. Anterior angles of the pronotum obtuse and barely protruding. Base of the pronotum clearly narrower than the anterior margin of the elytra; the punctuation of the base is hidden by longitudinal clefts, so the surface of this region presents a striated appearance. Elytra punctuation deep. Median lobe of the aedeagus ( Fig. 3B View Fig ) narrower and with the apex more developed than in P. testaceus .

Chorology

Mediterranean coast of South Europe, from Spain to Greece (including Malta) and North Africa ( Compte Sart 1968; Magrini & Schembri 1997; Bousquet 2017).

Ibero-Balearic distribution ( Fig. 4B View Fig ): in the Iberian Peninsula, the species is present discontinuously along the Mediterranean coast, from Cádiz to Tarragona ( Spain), and in saline localities of the Ebro valley (NE Spain) and the Southern Sub-plateau (SE Spain). The species has been reported, with no precision, from Algarve (SW Portugal; Zaballos & Jeanne 1994), Los Monegros Desert (NE Spain; Vives & Vives 1978a, 1981, 1999), saltmarshes of Alicante (E Spain; Vives & Vives 1978a) and a saltmarsh in Toledo (SE Spain) ( Vives & Vives 1981). We examined collection material from Huelva (SW Spain, with no precise locality), a territory from which P. gracilis has never previously been reported. In the Balearic Islands, Pogonistes gracilis is present in Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza.

Biology

The species inhabits coastal and interior regions equally ( Bolívar 1919; see Vives & Vives 1978a, 1978b, 1981). Imagoes are active during spring, principally from March to July, but some records are dated from other months such as November ( Andújar et al. 2002). Pogonistes gracilis can be found in direct contact with water when it takes refuge under the rocks on the shores, in damp and saline environments where it occurs ( Ortuño & Marcos 2003).
