Diagnosis. One or two dorsal fins, VI-IX, spines articulate with supporting radials, one or two supernumerary dorsal spines without anterior procumbent spine; one or two anal spines, first spine small, supernumerary in position, second spine or first dorsal ray in serial association with first distal and proximal-middle radials; first segmented anal ray branched; pterosphenoids separate; parietal separated by supraoccipital; ribs rod-like or variably expanded proximally; PU2 with neural crest; second epibranchial articulating with third pharyngobranchial; swim bladder simple without anterior or posterior modifications, a dorsal oval and ventral gas glands; free neuromasts on head, body and caudal fin; lateral line present from posttemporal to caudal fin either with scales or with free neuromasts; males mouth brood fertilized eggs; simple filaments present on eggs around the micropyle.
