Penottus tuberculiformis sp. n.

( Figs. 2 View FIGURE 2 A, B, 3D, 4D, 5D, 6D, 7D)

Description. Body elongate, male ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 A) fuscous, with spots pale; paranota and median carina blackish brown; lateral carinae pale brown; posterior process of pronotum blackish with apex pale brown; ventral side of body blackish brown. Female ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 B) yellowish brown, paler than male, ventral side of body blackish brown. Body length (N = 1 male, 1 female): male, 5.38; female, 5.04; width (across hemelytra): male, 2.18; female, 2.23.

Head long, preocular part longer than longitudinal length of eyes (0.28/0.17) in lateral view; frontal and median spines stout, short, erect, tuberculiform; occipital spines long, appressed. Antenniferous tubercles short, apex bent downwards; antennal segmental measurements: male, I, 0.25; II, 0.16; III, 1.43; IV, 0.50; female, I, 0.24; II, 0.16; III, 1.30; IV, 0.49. Bucculae narrow, mostly biseriate and narrower anteriorly, joined in front. Rostral sulcus straight, narrow, indistinctly uniseriate, widely open behind; rostrum reaching apex of rostral sulcus.

Pronotum moderately convex. Anterior margin of collar moderately truncated, median portion of collar somewhat convex in female. Hood of collar low, somewhat rooflike, longer than wide, five areolae long. Median carina raised along pronotum, uniseriate, somewhat sinuate; anterior part of lateral carinae concealed by the vertical paranota, slightly sinuate and not raised, with a few spines on each ridge ( Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 D). Paranota not much inflated ( Figs. 3 View FIGURE 3 D, 4D), tuberculiform, projecting upright, longer than high (l/h: 1.10/0.80) but higher than wide (h/ w: 0.80/0.72), areolae large, polygonal; paranota covering most of pronotum except posterior process, entire median carina, hood and collar, with outer margin much appressed on the pronotal disc, touching median carina but not meeting dorsally; width across paranota nearly two-thirds of length of pronotum (1.38/2.23), height of paranota twice longer than length between base of paranota and inner-lateral margin of propleuron (0.80/0.31); area of paranota relatively small in dorsal view ( Fig. 7 View FIGURE 7 D), area laterad of LAMP smaller than area mediad of LAMP, paranotal outline moderately convex. Posterior pronotal process flat. Scent gland ostioles elongate as illustrated in Fig. 5 View FIGURE 5 D.

Hemelytra large, widest at median portion. Costal area sinuate, anteriorly bent upwards, mostly biseriate, triseriate in places, most areolae arranged in a transverse row, relatively regular. Subcostal area wider than costal area, divided into two areas by a longitudinal vein; outer part uniseriate, inner part quadriseriate, areolae small. Discoidal area approximately two-thirds as long as hemelytra, ten to eleven areolae broad at widest part, with outer margin sinuate. Sutural area large, fifteen to sixteen areolae broad at widest part, areolae small, with veinlets not prominent.

Etymology. The specific name, tuberculiformis , is combined by the Latin noun tuberculum (= tubercle) and the postfix - formis (= -formed, -shaped), in reference to the tubercle-like paranota.

Material examined. Holotype: male, China, Yunnan Province, Pingbian county, Dawei Mountain, 22. V. 1996, 1700 m, Leyi Zheng leg. Paratype: 1 female, same data as holotype.

Remarks. The paranota of P. tuberculiformis sp. n. are tuberculiform and smaller than other congeners in dorsal view ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 C, D, etc.), which is unique in the genus Penottus .

P. tuberculiformis sp. n. is similar to P. abnormis Péricart, 1992 View in CoL ( Malaysia: Sabah) and P. tibetanus View in CoL ; however, this new species differs from the last by its wider subcostal area (five areolae vs. four areolae). Besides, P. tuberculiformis sp. n. differs from P. abnormis View in CoL by its longer body (5.38 vs. 4.50 of P. abnormis View in CoL ), its R+M vein being sinuate (in P. abnormis View in CoL it is nearly straight). It differs from P. tibetanus View in CoL by its paranotal outline smoothly convex laterally ( Fig.7 View FIGURE 7 D, E), its length of visible hood in lateral view nearly 1/3 of the height of paranota whereas nearly 1/ 5 in P. tibetanus View in CoL , and its paranota are less inflated than P. tibetanus View in CoL ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 C–E, etc.). In addition, this new species differs distinctly from the above described three new species by its lateral carinae beneath the paranota being slightly sinuate and not raised but greatly sinuate and raised or moderately raised in the others ( Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 ).
