Telorchis hagmanni ( Lent & Freitas, 1937) View in CoL

( Fig.7 View FIGURE 7 )

Host: Podocnemis lewyana

Site of infection: small intestine

Localities: San Nicolás (9° 8'17.20"N; 74°38'59.42" O); Ricaurte (9°7'7.63"N; 74°11'40.83" O).

Accesion numbers: CCH.116 (124)

Redescription: Based in 10 individuals. Body elongate, 4.04–9.06 (5.64 ± 1.88) long by 0.86–1.24 (1.05 ± 0.16) maximum width; armed with spines that decreasing posterior to anterior testis. Oral sucker terminal 0.30– 0.45 (0.40 ± 0.05) long by 0.24–0.38 (0.30 ± 0.05) wide; short prepharynx; pharynx 0.20–0.38 (0.28 ± 0.06) long by 0.19–0.27 (0.23 ± 0.03) wide; oesophagus short. Caeca slender. Acetabulum medium, in the first quarter of body, 0.24–0.35 (0.29 ± 0.04) long by 0.24–0.38 (0.32 ± 0.04) wide. Testes intercaecal, oval to triangular; may be diagonal, nearly contiguous, anterior testis 0.20–0.39 (0.29 ± 0.07) long by 0.44–0.59 (0.50 ± 0.05) wide; posterior testis 0.24–0.49 (0.36 ± 0.09) long by 0.38–0.53 (0.48 ± 0.05) wide. Cirrus sac elongate, short to medium, from oral sucker to ovary, in posterior half of forebody. Seminal vesicle internal, unipartita. Genital pore ventral, intercaecal, pre–acetabular, slightly sinistral. Vitelline follicles in longitudinal rows of clusters; extending anterior from ovary level to pre–testicular zone. Ovary oval, 0.14–0.24 (0.20 ± 0.03) long by 0.35–0.48 (0.42 ± 0.05) wide. Uterus between ovary and anterior testis. Metraterm muscular, as long as cirrus sac. Eggs 25.87–31.84 (29.72 ± 1.91) long by 9.95–15.92 (13.93 ± 1.68) wide. Excretory vesicle Y – shape; pore terminal.

Remarks: The original description of Telorchis hagmanni Lent & Freitas, 1937 should be emended to include oval to triangular testes; diagonal, nearly contiguous. Seminal vesicle internal, unipartita. Vitelline follicles in longitudinal rows of clusters. Metraterm muscular, as long as the cirrus sac. Telorchis hagmanni differs from its congeners due to the presence of a cirrus sac near to the ovary and oral sucker, which is larger than the acetabulum ( Wharton 1940), this species is similar to T. grocotti Caballero & Zerecero, 1954 in the testes and cirrus sac shape, but differs in the metraterma position, relative size of the oral sucker, acetabulum and pharynx, and the position and size of the ovary. The similarities between T. hagmanni and T. grocotti should be evaluated in detail, since that both species were described in a single individual, we do not reject the synonymy between both species.

When comparing the suckers and the pharynx ratios between the holotype of T. hagmanni from the Amazonas river, Pará, Brazil and specimens from the Magdalena river ( Fig. 7 View FIGURE 7 ), no differences were found in: oral sucker length/acetabulum length (1.25–1.28:1 vs. 1.19:1, respectively), oral sucker width/acetabulum width (0.97–1:1 vs.

1:1, respectively), oral sucker length/pharynx length (1.19–1.52:1 vs. 1.62:1, respectively), pharynx length/ acetabulum length (0.83–1.07:1 vs. 0.74:1, respectively). Adults of T. hagmanni may show variation in the distance between the ovary and the cirrus – sac; the Colombian specimens are small to medium in length (4.04–9.06 mm) and the cirrus sac is overlaps the acetabulum and the ovary. In the original description, however, worms are larger (18.5 mm) and the cirrus–sac is a little bit away from the ovary ( Lent & Freitas, 1937).
