1. Lychnophora candelabrum Schultz-Bipontinus (1863: 345) View in CoL . Episcothamnus candelabrum (Sch. Bip.) Robinson (1981: 210) . Lychnophoriopsis candelabrum (Sch. Bip.) Robinson (1992b: 644) . Type:— BRAZIL. Minas Gerais: Serra do Vento, 20 October 1818, F. Sello(w) 995 (holotype: B †; lectotype: P e! [P04416571], designated by Semir et al. (2011: 81); isolectotype: BR [not seen]) ( Fig. 20 A–B View FIGURE 20 ). Lychnophoriopsis heterotheca Schultz-Bipontinus (1863: 376) , syn. nov. Lychnophora heterotheca (Sch. Bip.) Coile & Jones (1981: 534) .
Type:— BRAZIL. Minas Gerais: in saxosis Serra da Lapa , November 1824, L. Riedel 1009 (holotype: LE; isotypes: BR [not seen],
F e! [ F 0077150 F (fragment)], P [ P 00733042]). Lychnophoriopsis macrocephala Glaziou (1909: 380) , nom. nud.
Distribution and habitat: — Brazil (Minas Gerais). Campo rupestre; 760–1480 m.
Taxonomic Notes: —A broad concept of this species is adopted here; distinctive features are the capitula with 11–25 florets and the mucronate, squarrose, villose to lanate phyllaries. Closely related to Lychnophora hatschbachii but the latter species has glabrous phyllaries and a naked capitulum receptacle (vs. foveolate). Neotypification of L. candelabrum by Robinson (1981) was unnecessary due to the existence of duplicates of Sello(w) 995 at BR and P. As more specimens are available, it becomes evident now that the characters proposed by Robinson (1992b) to set apart L. heterotheca from L. candelabrum are extremely variable and cannot be used.
