status

1. Albertinia brasiliensis Sprengel (1821: 133) View in CoL . Vernonia brasiliensis (Spreng.) Lessing (1831: 682) . Type:— BRAZIL.

No other data, F. Sello(w) s.n. (n° Herbarium Sprengel 522) (lectotype: P e! [ P02690750 ] pro parte, designated here)

( Fig. 9 A–B View FIGURE 9 ).

Symblomeria baldwiniana Nuttall (1840: 284) View in CoL . Type :— BRAZIL. Rio de Janeiro, 1817–1818, W. Baldwin s.n. (lectotype: PH e! [ PH 00029736], designated here; isolectotype: BM e! [ BM001009171 ]) .

Vernonia platycephala Gardner (1846: 212) View in CoL . Type:— BRAZIL. Rio de Janeiro: in low woods on the ascent of the Corcovado, near Rio de Janeiro, 7 January 1841, G. Gardner 5508 pro parte (lectotype: BM e! [ BM001009172 ], designated here; isolectotypes: K e! [ K00014306 , K00014311 ], W e! [ W18890008804 , W0032152 ]).

Distribution and habitat: — Brazil ( Bahia , Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro, Sergipe). Margins of rainforests and secondary woods; up to 1200 m.

Taxonomic notes: —A common species easily recognized by its deeply alveolate receptacle ( Fig. 9 B View FIGURE 9 ). The protologue is in Sprengel (1821) and not “Syst. Veg. (ed. 16) 3: 434. 1826” as often cited (e.g. Robinson, 1999a). In the latter publication the Sello(w) material is cited but without number. The Compositae of Sprengel’s herbarium were sold to Schultz-Bipontinus and are now, through the herbier Cosson, at P in the herbier général ( Blake 1930; Stafleu & Cowan 1985). There are two specimens at P (P00682452 and P02690750), both bearing the labels of the Cosson and Schultz-Bipontinus herbaria. Sprengel’s new taxa (in both Neue entdeckungen im ganzen umfang der pflanzenkunde and Systema Vegetabilium) are characteristically marked with an asterisk together with the name (Hind pers. comm.). Such annotation appears on a blue-grey label with Sprengel’s handwriting on the specimen P02690750, which is therefore chosen as a lectotype. Two other Sello(w) specimens (with number 391) of that species have been localized at BM and BR but they are here treated as a different gathering since there is no Sello(w) number on the P specimen.

There are two specimens of Symblomeria baldwiniana at PH and BM, both specimens with Nuttall’s handwritten labels and the asterisk in front of the name that Thomas Nuttall generally added to the new plants he described ( Freire-Fierro & Landale 2011); he used PH as his home institution until 1841 ( Stafleu & Cowan 1981) and therefore the PH sheet has been chosen as lectotype. It is worth noting that in the protologue Nuttall said “collected by the late Doctor Baldwin on some part of the Pacific coast of South America”, the Pacific coast reference does not appear in any handwritten specimen labels and the PH specimen bears a label distributed by the Smithsonian Institution of the US South Pacific Exploring Expedition with “ Brazil, near Rio de Janeiro ” typed, but this label applies to the other material mounted on the sheet ( PH 00029737) and is for a Wilke’s collection that appears with the name “ Albertinia brasiliensis DC. ” written on it, collected in Rio de Janeiro between November 1838 and January 1839. Therefore, it is highly unlikely that Wilke’s material was in Philadelphia (or seen by Nuttall) before Nuttall read his paper in October 1840 (Hind pers. comm.).

Two of the four sheets at K (K000873903, K000873904) which bear a label with Gardner’s handwriting and number ‘5508’ (type collection of Vernonia platycephala ) are samples of Lepidaploa obtusifolia ( Lessing 1829: 308) Robinson (1990: 490) . For the choice of the BM material as lectotype see Materials and Methods section.
