Haliotrematoides cornigerum ( Zhukov, 1976) n. comb.

Syn. Haliotrema cornigerum Zhukov, 1976 .

Type host and locality: Lane snapper, Lutjanus synagris (Linnaeus) (Lutjanidae) : Bay of Campeche (Area Havana).

Site of infection: Gills.

Specimens studied: 3 voucher specimens, USNPC 91427, 91429, 91430.

Previous records (as Haliotrema cornigerum ): Lutjanus synagris: Bay of Campeche (Area Havana) ( Zhukov 1976). Lutjanus mahogoni: Bay of Campeche (Area Havana) ( Zhukov 1976); Puerto Rico ( Bosques Rodríguez 2004).

Remarks: This species was not collected during the present study. Although the available voucher specimens of H. cornigerum are from Zhukov’s original collection (see Kritsky & Boeger 2002), they are insufficient for redescription of the species. Zhukov’s (1976) original figures and those provided by Bosques Rodríguez (2004) are adequate, however, for identification and justify transfer of the species to Haliotrematoides as H. cornigerum ( Zhukov, 1976) n. comb. The species resembles H. plectridium in that both species have an inner spur on the dorsal anchor shaft. They are easily differentiated by the comparative morphology of the MCO (shaft of MCO having a proximal loop and lacking a distal angular bend in H. cornigerum ; loop lacking and shaft with an approximately 90 o bend near its midlength in H. plectridium ).
