Raphidia crassicornis Schummel, 1832: 15 . Type locality: Poland (near Scheitnich, formerly Silesia, Germany). Inocellia crassicornis ( Schummel, 1832) View in CoL : H. Aspöck et al. 1991 (monograph), 2001 (taxonomy, distribution).

Diagnosis. The male is characterized by the ninth gonocoxites with digitiform processes on inner margins, which shows, however, a large variability. The endophallus bears two pairs of bristle tufts. The female seventh sternite caudally possesses a pair of lobes, forming a broad median incision.

Description. Male. Forewing length 8.0–11.0 mm.

Head subquadrate, black, clypeus slightly more pale, vertex medially with a pair of indistinct brownish vittae. Antennal sclerite (torulus) and antenna yellowish brown, with distal half of flagellum slightly darkened toward tip. Mouthparts brown.

Thorax blackish brown; pronotum medially with a pair of brownish hook-like markings on anterior half; meso- and metanota each with a yellowish transverse marking on posterior margin of scutellum. Legs yellow with yellowish setae. Wings hyaline, pterostigma brown, veins brown. Anterior branch of Rs with one forked vein and one simple vein running to wing margin.

Abdomen blackish brown, venter slightly more pale; each pregenital segment with a narrow yellowish transverse marking on posterior margins of tergite and sternite; genital segment brown with ectoproct yellow. Ninth gonocoxite ( Figs. 14–16 View FIGURES 14 – 22 ) shell-like, nearly semicircular, slightly wider than long; subdistal portion of inner side dorsally with a blunt stylus bearing a bristle tuft, and with two or three bristles ventrally near posterior margin; a small digitiform process sometimes present on inner margin of gonocoxite 9. Pseudostyli (basal parts of gonapophyses 9) ( Fig. 15 View FIGURES 14 – 22 ) paired and foliate. Fused parameres (complex of fused gonocoxites, gonapophyses, and gonostyli 10) ( Figs. 16, 18 View FIGURES 14 – 22 ) small, proximal portion flattened, roundly expanded, and concave ventrad, distal projection slightly curved dorsad with tip concave. Gonarcus (fused gonocoxites 11) ( Figs. 15–17 View FIGURES 14 – 22 ) shield-like, with dorsal margin produced posteriorly, in caudal view subtrapezoidal. Endophallus ( Figs. 15–16 View FIGURES 14 – 22 ) short, distal portion medially with a pair of bristle tufts directed dorsad and additionally with a few bristles directed ventrad. Ectoproct ( Fig. 14 View FIGURES 14 – 22 ) subtrapezoidal with rounded posterodorsal corner in lateral view. Hypandrium internum ( Fig. 19 View FIGURES 14 – 22 ) small with rather narrow lobes.

Female. Forewing length 10.5–15.0 mm.

Seventh sternite ( Figs. 20–21 View FIGURES 14 – 22 ) subtrapezoidal in lateral view, posteriorly produced; in ventral view posterior margin with deep suboblong incision, forming a pair of short digitiform processes. Subgenitale ( Figs. 20–21 View FIGURES 14 – 22 ) small, suboval. Ectoproct ( Fig. 20 View FIGURES 14 – 22 ) nearly semicircular in lateral view. Atrium bursae ( Fig. 21 View FIGURES 14 – 22 ) subtriangular; sacculus bursae tubular; receptaculum seminis long, with a pair of long ovoid glandula receptaculi distad.

Distribution. China (Heilongjiang Prov., Jilin Prov.); North Korea, South Korea (new record), Mongolia, Russia, Armenia, Sweden, Germany, Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia (H. Aspöck et al. 2001). The species represents a Manchurian faunal element of the Ussurian and the Korean secondary centers with extremely high expansivity.

Remarks. Variability of the male genital sclerites of this species possibly has not yet been understood. The digitiform processus of the gonocoxites 9 (see H. Aspöck et al. 1991, vol. 2: figs 2495, 2496, labeled “s”) may be of different shape or may be entirely missing, however, it is premature at present to assume that this reflects subspecific differentiation. The species appears to be closely related to I. japonica because of the similar gonarcus which is without any projections and because of the female sternite 7 which possesses a pair of caudal lobes.
