Diagnosis. Sphecotypus resembles Myrmecium Latreille, 1824 , in having deep constrictions on a narrowed carapace, but can be distinguished from this genus and other Castianeirinae by having: (1) only one deep constriction of the carapace, which is behind the cephalic region clearly separating the cephalic and thoracic regions; and (2) the prolongation of the sternum in front of the first coxae, producing a “neck” ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 A–C) ( Reiskind 1969; Deeleman-Reinhold 2001). In addition Sphecotypus differs from Myrmecium by having all coxae evenly spaced, and all emerging from beneath the thoracic region of the carapace ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 A–C), whereas the first two coxae in Myrmecium are spaced close to each other and emerge from beneath the cephalic region of the carapace ( O. Pickard-Cambridge 1895).
