Austroblechnum organense (Brade) Gasper & V.A.O.Dittrich, Phytotaxa View in CoL 275(3): 203. 2016.
= Blechnum organense Brade, Arq. Inst. Biol. Veg. 2(1): 2–3, pl. 1, f. 3, pl. 3. 1935.
Range:— Colombia to Bolivia (SC); southeastern Brazil. Said by Rojas (2008) to occur in Haiti, Mexico, and Mesoamerica, but specimens have not been seen, and we are doubtful that this name is properly applied to specimens from this area.
Ecology:— Rare; terrestrial in humid forests; so far known in Bolivia only from the Siberia region at 2300–2500 m.
Notes:— In overall appearance, this looks like a smaller version of Austroblechnum divergens with thinner blade texture. More study is needed to clarify species boundaries between these two species as well as to relatives A. lehmannii and Caribbean A. lherminieri (Bory ex Kunze) Gasper & V.A.O.Dittrich provided some insight in this regard, but much more remains to be done. Rhizome and stipe base scales of A. organense appear to be different from those of A. divergens (V.A.O. Dittrich, pers. comm.).
