Salpichlaena J.Sm., J. Bot. View in CoL (Hooker) 4: 168. 1841.

Salpichlaena View in CoL is a distinctive genus that climbs by means of its twining rachises, has entire pinnules with thickened, cartilaginous margins, and linear, parallel sori located close to the costae. The only other similarly climbing neotropical fern genus is the unrelated Lygodium View in CoL ( Lygodiaceae View in CoL ), which has sori borne in sorophores along the margin. Salpichlaena View in CoL is neotropical, with 2–3 species, only one of which is known from Bolivia. The genus has a unique chromosome base number in Blechnaceae View in CoL : x = 40. Salpichlaena View in CoL is sister to the combined clade Stenochlaena View in CoL + Telmatoblechnum View in CoL (Gabriel y Galán et al. 2013, Gasper et al. 2017).
