= Blechnum binervatum (Poir.) C.V.Morton & Lellinger subsp. fragile (Desv.) R.M.Tryon & Stolze, Fieldiana, Bot. View in CoL n.s., 32: 64, f. 3d–f.
1993.
Range:— Greater Antilles; mountains from southern Mexico to Panama; Andes from Venezuela to Bolivia (CO, LP, SC).
Ecology:— Common; hemiepiphytic in humid forests, especially on tree fern trunks; (850–) 1550–3300 m.
Notes:— Rojas (2006) separated the species Blechnum nigrum A.Rojas from B. fragile based on having sparse
(vs. dense), shorter (5–10 mm long vs. 8–15 mm), blackish (vs. brownish yellow to brown) rhizome scales mixed with very small, 0.3–1(–2) mm long ones. However, at least for the Bolivian specimens studied by us, these differences do not seem to hold, and we currently find no basis for recognizing this as a distinct taxon. In any case, B. nigrum A.Rojas is a later homonym of B. nigrum (Colenso) Mett. , from New Zealand, and hence illegitimate.
