Lomariocycas comprises a very distinctive austral group of ca. 18 species having thick, erect trunks that mimic cycads— hence the genus name. Members also have characteristic needle-like, curved, strongly or faintly bicolored, and centrally thickened scales on the rhizome apices and petiole bases. There are about 12 species in the Neotropics, including the Juan Fernández Islands, and ca. six species in Africa and Madagascar; four species occur in Bolivia. x = 33.
