Discussion
Currently, 18 species are known to compose the millipede genus Catharosoma —all confined to South America— and thus characterizing this genus as purely Neotropical ( Schubart 1944). The species C. bilineatum , C. hoffmani , C. manhnerti and C. paraguayense have been described from Paraguay, but C. paraguayense also occurs in Argentina and Brazil ( Golovatch 2005a). In Brazil, this latter species has been recorded from Santa Catarina, Mato Grosso ( Schubart 1953; Golovatch 2005a) and Paraná (the present paper). The other species have been described from southern Brazil (states of Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul) ( Golovatch 2005a), but the genus still needs more collections to fully know its distribution in South America. Its distribution throughout its range is probably wider than is currently known.
According to Schubart (1953), species identification is difficult because the available drawings in the original descriptions sometime show the gonopods not exactly in the same position. Because of this problem, there may have been too many species of this genus synonymized. A detailed revision and new gonopod illustrations, orientated exactly in the same position, are required to facilitate the correct identification of species in the future taxonomic work on this genus.
