(Figs. 2A–K)

Fauvel, 1895: 232 (type locality: Burma: Senmigion); Bernhauer & Schubert, 1912: 205; Cameron, 1931: 43 ( China: Taiwan); Scheerpeltz, 1933: 1222 (catalog); Willers, 2001: 21 ( China); Smetana, 2004: 613 (Oriental Region).

Type material. Syntypes: BURMA: male, Teinzo, V.1886, collected by Leonardo Fea ( DEI (Kraatz collection)); female, Bangoon, V.1885, collected by Leonardo Fea ( FMNH (M. Bernhauer collection)).

Additional materials. CHINA: Gansu province: male, Hweisin (Kansu), collected by Leonardo Fea ( FMNH); Taiwan: male, Taihorin, 1911, collected by Sauter ( FMNH (Bernhauer collection)); BURMA: female, Senmigion, 28.II.1886, collected by Leonardo Fea ( ZMHB (Schubert collection)); INDIA: female, “East India, gK. R. Rolle”, “Riv Claire, lis” (as on labels), ( FMNH (Bernhauer collection)); INDONESIA: female, Java, Bowring collection ( FMNH).

Description. Male. Length: 5.7–6.8 mm; width: 1.16–1.20 mm. Length of different body parts: HL AL PL ELL = 1.38 1.05 2.39 0.91 mm; width: HW PW ELW ABW = 1.05 1.20 0.90 0.92mm.

Head and elytra blackish blue with metallic shine, front and basal 1/3 of elytra with rosy shine. Labrum black, mandibles blackish brown with inner margin brownish red. Labial palpi brownish red with apex of 2nd and apical two segments blackish brown. Antennae with first two segments brownish red, the rests blackish brown. Pronotum and 3rd–6th abdominal segments brownish red, 7th–8th segments black. Scutellum black. Legs black, coxae somehow brownish yellow.

Head nearly hexagonal, HL/HW = 0.99, lateral margin broadly rounded. Eyes relatively large, protruded laterally, HL/EL = 2.84, diameter of eye longer than gena but slightly shorter than temple (gena eye temple = 0.33 0.32 0.26 mm). Labrum (Fig. 2A) transverse, anterior margin sinuate, two pairs of short angles on both sides of middle notch, a small and obtuse denticle in bottom of middle notch. Mandibles (Fig. 2C) with an acute bicuspidate tooth on inner margin, behind it with round notch.

Pronotum nearly oviform, PL/PW = 1.17, widest in apical 1/3, broadly rounded laterally. Disc very convex, longitudinal median area smooth and glabrous, lateral areas covered with fine and sparse punctures, diameter of punctures as long on head disk, each puncture with a black seta. Metaventrite in middle of posterior part with fine and short groove, the groove gradually tapered anteriorly.

Elytra broad and nearly parallel, ELL\ELW = 1.15, ESL/ELL = 0.86, humeral angles well developed, posterior margin slightly sinuate. Punctures on elytra thick and dense, as large as on head disk, interval between punctures shorter than their diameter, each puncture with blackish brown seta. Hind wings well developed. Legs long, protarsi with 2nd segment broadest, 3rd slightly narrower than 2nd, 1st as wide as 4th and both narrowest, both meso- and metatarsi with first four segments gradually shortened from 1st to 4th.

Abdomen elongate, widest at 7th (5th visible) segment, where wider than head or pronotum but narrower than elytra. Setiferous punctures on tergites fine and sparse, denser laterally, base of each tergite with punctures relatively sparse. Sternite punctures denser and finer than tergite punctures. 7th sternite with hind margin shallowly emarginated. 8th sternite on posterior margin (Fig. 2E) with narrow notch, about 1/3 of the whole length, its bottom slightly rounded and inner sides nearly parallel. 9th sternite (Fig. 2F) with apex acute and slightly rounded.

Aedeagus (Figs. 2I –K) slender and symmetrical, length/width=3.06. Median lobe (excluding dorsal plate) with basal portion slightly bulbous and lateral margin broadly sinuate, apex rounded. Dorsal plate of median lobe longitudinally elliptic with apex slightly not reaching apices of ventral plate and parameres. Internal armature (Fig. 2K) irregular with apex Y-shaped.

Female. Labrum (Fig. 2B) with 3 pairs of small teeth on anterior margin, middle notch with an acute tooth in bottom. 8th sternite (Fig. 2G) with apex rounded and both sides obtusely notched. 9th sternite (Fig. 2H) length/width = 1.80, about half as long as in male, with V-shaped notch basally.

Remarks. This species can be easily distinguished from the other species of the subgenus Paederus s. str. by the following characters: tibiae and antennae from 3rd segment onward black, aedeagus primitive with simple internal armatures. These characters imply that this species should be moved to the subgenus Eopaederus .

Distribution. China (Gansu, Taiwan); Burma, India.
