Genus Leutziniscus View in CoL n. gen.

Diagnosis. Leutzinae with sixth and seventh pereonites free. Antennula with 11 articles, terminal article not bulbous. Body not ¯at or broad. Pleon in adult female with posterolateral spines. Female operculum lacking ventral medial spine or hook, and posterior margin broadly rounded and fringed with small setae. Uropods biramous.

Etymology. This new genus is named in honour of Dr James R. Leutze, Chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, in recognition of his concern for the health of the environment and his contributions to international understanding through the`Globe Watch Program’.

Remarks. This new genus Leutziniscus belongs to a cluster of genera, i.e. Austroniscus and Thaumastosoma of the subfamily Leutzinae , characterized by antennul a lacking the bulbous terminal article and with ®ve or more than ®ve articles in the antennula. Among these genera Austroniscus is an exception to the rule with a ¯at and broad body. Sexual dimorphism is seen in the pleon con®guration with either males or females having posterolateral spines in some of these genera.

In this new genus the pleon of the female has posterolateral spines. Species of the genera Thaumastosoma and Leutziniscus lack a ventral spine on the female operculum. Thaumastosoma is, however, distinguished from Leutziniscus in the female pleon con®guration, the former lacking posterolateral spines on the pleon and the latter with them.
