Cladopelma viridulum (Linnaeus) View in CoL

Tipula viridula Linnaeus, 1767: 975 .

Chironomus (Harnischia) viridulus (Linnaeus) ; Goetghebuer (1928: 86). Chironomus (Chironomus) viridulus (Linnaeus) ; Edwards (1929: 390). Chironomus (Cryptochironomus) viridulus Fabricius, 1805 ; Tokunaga (1940: 301).

Harnischia (Harnischia) viridulus (Linnaeus) ; Townes (1945: 34).

Cryptocladopelma viridula (Linnaeus) ; Reiss (1968b: 199), Pinder (1978: 118), Albu (1980: 124). Cladopelma viridula (Linnaeus) View in CoL ; Yamamoto (1997: 585), Makarchenko et al. (2005: 408). Cladopelma viridulum (Linnaeus) View in CoL ; Spies and Saether (2004: 12).

Diagnostic characters: According to the descriptions and figures in Tokunaga (1940) and Albu (1980), the species is similar to C. edwardsi View in CoL in the shape of superior volsella. It can be separated by the triangular tergite IX and the apically rounded gonostylus.

Distribution: The species occurs in the Holarctic region. It is recorded from the Russian Far East and Japan ( Makarchenko et al. 2005; Yamamoto 1997).

Remarks: The species was recorded as Harnischia viridulus from Thailand by Hashimoto et al. (1981). However, Yamamoto (1997) considered these specimens as belonging to C. edwardsi based on the redescription and illustration. Chaudhuri and Chattopadhyay (1990) and Dutta et al. (1996) published the species in Harnischia from India, but their diagnostic characters indicate that the Indian specimens also belong to C. edwardsi . Further, Wang et al. (1977) recorded Cryptochironomus (Harnischia) viridulum from Hubei Province in China, but according to their redescription and figures, it should also be C. edwardsi .
