Arpactophilus yuanga View in CoL sp. nov.

( Figs. 111–112 View FIGURES 107 – 112 )

Diagnosis. Arpactophilus yuanga is the only New Caledonian species in the genus with the combination of two submarginal cells in the forewing, a clypeus yellow in the apical half, yellow markings on the lower frons ( Fig. 111 View FIGURES 107 – 112 ), a mostly coarsely reticulate dorsal surface of propodeum, half yellow and half brown coxae, and a flat sternum II without a bulge ( Fig. 112 View FIGURES 107 – 112 , and as in Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1 – 4 ).

Description. FEMALE: Total length 4.4–4.8 mm, mean = 4.6 mm; forewing length 2.8–3.0 mm, mean = 2.9 mm.

Body black, with areas of yellow and brown. Yellow: apical half of clypeus; labrum; mandible; palpi; front of scape; band on lower frons between scape and inner compound eye margin ( Fig. 111 View FIGURES 107 – 112 ); anterior pronotal margin; coxae apically; trochanters; most of pro- and mesofemora; metafemur at joints; tibiae; tarsi. Brown: posterior of scape; pedicel; flagellum; tegula; most of coxae; pro- and mesofemora posterior; metafemur, except area next to joint. Wings hyaline; pterostigma dark brown.

Head about as long as wide in frontal view. Apical margin of clypeus projecting medially, with a shallow Vshaped incision ( Fig. 111 View FIGURES 107 – 112 ). Apical margin of labrum projecting medially in a nearly straight line. Ventral mandibular tooth about ¼–1/5 of total mandibular length, not reaching opposite mandibular base. Palpal formula 4:3. Frons colliculate to imbricate with dense punctation and associated setae. Frontal carina present from median ocellus to apical half of clypeus, elevated to a flat point at basal clypeal margin. Scape 3.9 × as long as wide. Ocellar triangle anterior of tangent between upper posterior orbits of compound eyes, lateral ocelli anterior of tangent by approximately their diameter. Occipital carina interrupted dorsally ( Fig. 6 View FIGURES 5 – 9 ). Gena imbricate with setae ventrally dense, laterally sparser, without tubercles, spines, or dorsoventral carina. Hypostomal midventral line faintly carinate with bordering sparse and short transverse carinulae on hypostomal integument, not angulate.

Mesosoma about 1.7 × as long as wide in dorsal view. Propodeum about 0.7 × as long as wide in dorsal view. Mesosoma imbricate with punctation ( Fig. 112 View FIGURES 107 – 112 ), except impunctate on dorsal surface of propodeum; lateral surface of propodeum also transversely carinulate; dorsal surface of propodeum with median area coarsely reticulate, apically and laterally finely reticulate and transversely carinate (similar to pattern in Fig. 20 View FIGURES 16 – 22 , but finer). Slightly pitted sulcus present posterior to mesoscuto-mesoscutellar sulcus. Hypersternal sulcus present as short impression at bordering omaulus. Metafemur 3.0 × as long as wide. Metatibia without differently colored area apically. Pretarsal claws without teeth. Forewing with two submarginal cells; anterior border of submarginal cell II slightly shorter than posterior border. Hind wing with five distal hamuli.

Metasoma polished, with sparse punctation ( Fig. 112 View FIGURES 107 – 112 ). Metasomal sternum II without bulge (as in Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1 – 4 ). Pygidium with broad row of silk setae apically.

MALE: Unknown.

Remarks. Arpactophilus yuanga is easily identified by its coloration. The species has similar truncate yellow markings on the frons and a partially yellow clypeus as are present in A. arha and A. merle , but can distinguished from A. arha by the lack of a bulge on sternum II ( Fig. 112 View FIGURES 107 – 112 , and as in Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1 – 4 ) and from A. merle by the black mesoscutellum. The markings on the frons are similar to A. fwai , but in A. yuanga the clypeus is not entirely yellow.

Material examined. HOLOTYPE ♀: “ NEW CALEDONIA, Mt. Panier, 500–1000m, 11.X.1967, J. Sedlacek [ BPBM].

PARATYPE 1♀: NEW CALEDONIA 9964: 20°33’S x 164°46’E, 900m, Mt Panie track. 25 Sep–19 Nov 2000. Skevington & Burwell. Malaise” [QM].

Etymology. The specific epithet is taken from the name Yuanga , one of the New Caledonian native languages. It is treated as a noun in apposition.
