Arpactophilus pije View in CoL sp. nov.

( Figs. 87–88 View FIGURES 83 – 88 )

Diagnosis. Arpactophilus pije is the only New Caledonian species in the genus with the combination of a black clypeus with a yellow apical margin of clypeus, an apical clypeal margin with a shallow V-shaped incision ( Fig. 87 View FIGURES 83 – 88 ), a black frons, a dorsally-interrupted occipital carina ( Fig. 6 View FIGURES 5 – 9 ), a black mesoscutellum, mostly black pro- and metafemora and coxae, an imbricate frons with dense punctuation and without carinulae, and a metasomal sternum II without a bulge ( Fig. 88 View FIGURES 83 – 88 , and as in Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1 – 4 ).

Description. FEMALE: Total length 5.4 mm; forewing length 3.1 mm.

Body black, with areas of yellow. Yellow: apical margin of clypeus ( Fig. 87 View FIGURES 83 – 88 ); labrum; mandible; front of scape; tegula; trochanters; pro- and metafemur at joints, mesofemur more extensively ( Fig. 88 View FIGURES 83 – 88 ); tibiae; tarsi. Brown: front of flagellum; mesofemur partly. Wings hyaline; pterostigma brown.

Head about as long as wide in frontal view. Apical margin of clypeus projecting medially with shallow Vshaped incision ( Fig. 87 View FIGURES 83 – 88 ). Apical margin of labrum with shallow V-shaped incision. Ventral mandibular tooth about ¼–1/5 of total mandibular length, not reaching opposite mandibular base. Palpal formula 4:3. Frons imbricate with dense punctation and short setae. Frontal carina present from median ocellus almost to apical margin of clypeus, elevated to ridge on upper half of clypeus. Scape 3.8 × as long as wide. Ocellar triangle anterior of tangent between upper posterior orbits of compound eyes, lateral ocelli anterior of tangent by more than their diameter. Occipital carina interrupted dorsally ( Fig. 6 View FIGURES 5 – 9 ). Gena imbricate with sparse punctation and long setae, without tubercles, spines, or dorsoventral carina. Hypostomal midventral line faintly carinate with bordering sparse and short transverse carinulae on hypostomal integument.

Mesosoma about 1.7 × as long as wide in dorsal view. Propodeum about 0.8 × as long as wide in dorsal view. Mesosoma imbricate and densely punctured ( Fig. 88 View FIGURES 83 – 88 ), except on propodeum; lateral surface of propodeum transversely carinate; dorsal surface of propodeum coarsely reticulate (similar to pattern in Fig. 18 View FIGURES 16 – 22 ). Pitted sulcus present posterior to mesoscuto-mesoscutellar sulcus. Hypersternal sulcus present as slightly pitted, elongate impression, broader at omaulus. Metafemur 3.0 × as long as wide. Metatibia without differently colored area apically. Pretarsal claws without teeth. Forewing with two submarginal cells; anterior border of submarginal cell II slightly shorter than posterior border. Hind wing with five distal hamuli.

Metasoma polished, with sparse punctation ( Fig. 88 View FIGURES 83 – 88 ). Metasomal sternum II without bulge (as in Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1 – 4 ). Pygidium with broad row of silk setae apically.

MALE: Unknown.

Remarks. Arpactophilus pije is most similar to A. jawe , A. bwatoo and A. yuanga in body size and coloration. The species differs from A. jawe and A. bwatoo by its mostly black femora ( Fig. 88 View FIGURES 83 – 88 ), whereas A. jawe has unmarked, yellow femora ( Fig. 66 View FIGURES 65 – 70 ) and A. bwatoo partially black marked pro- and mesofemora and an almost unmarked, yellow metafemur ( Fig. 34 View FIGURES 29 – 34 ). From A. bwatoo it can also be distinguished by the sculpture of the frons which is longitudinally colliculate in A. bwatoo ( Fig. 33 View FIGURES 29 – 34 ) and punctate in A. pije (Fig, 65). In comparison to A. yuanga ( Fig. 111 View FIGURES 107 – 112 ), A. pije has a black frons without yellow markings.
