Since 1975 both species were regularly observed to cause harm to the foliage in Bobai County (Guangxi Aut.

Reg.). The highest density of pests was recognized in 1984 with 2000 to 5000 specimens per tree. Several

hundred ha of Castanopsis cuspidata and C. hicklii (Fagaceae) trees were almost totally defoliated (Chen,

1994).
