Horistontus sergipinus sp. nov.

(Figs. 70–80)

Holotype (male). [ Brazil]. Canindé do S[ão] F[rancis]co. (SE), (Faz[enda] Brejo), 25.III.2000, am.1, Iannuzzi, L. col. (Malaise); Projeto Xingó Biodiversidade Área 5 ( MZSP).

Holotype (male). Body length: 8.5 mm.

General integument reddish-brown with fore angles of pronotum yellowish; antennae and legs clearer. Pubescence whitish, fine, long, dense and decumbent.

Frons (Fig. 72) slightly convex and wide, wider than long; anterior margin widened laterally and slightly rounded, upwardly directed; secondary carina present; punctation coarse and dense. Antennae (Fig. 70) not reaching hind angles of pronotum; slightly serrate; antennomeres II and III elongate, almost same size; IV–X elongate and triangular.

Pronotum (Fig. 71) as long as wide, strongly narrowed anteriorly; lateral margins rounded; strongly convex; densely micropunctate intermingled with punctation coarse and dense; hind angles wide and backwardly directed; lateral carina incomplete, reaching half of pronotum length; carina of hind angles fused with lateral carina. Hypomeron densely micropunctate intermingled with sparse moderately coarse punctation. Pronotosternal suture almost straight, opened anteriad not forming anterior channel. Prosternum narrower than hypomeron; densely micropunctate; prosternal lobe short with punctation coarser than prosternum; prosternal spine flattened laterally with truncate apex. Leg (Fig. 74): metacoxal plate wide, strongly narrowed on lateral half; two well developed tibial spurs; tarsal claws widened at base forming a straight angular tooth. Scutellum (Fig. 73) pentagonal, wider than long, narrower anteriorly; lateral margins almost reaching second elytral stria. Elytra wider than prothorax, with apex narrowed and conjointly rounded; striae grooved with row of coarse punctures; interstices very convex; apices with four interstices irregularly carinate giving a rugose appearance.

Tergite VIII (Fig. 76) slightly wider than long, narrowed to apex; subtriangular with lateral margins rounded and anterior margin prominent at middle; many moderately short setae, disposed especially medioanteriorly on distal 2/3. Sternite VIII (Fig. 78) band-like, narrowed on distal half; strongly and widely notched at anterior margin forming two inclined lobes near middle; emargination reaching distal half of sternite length; long setae disposed on each distal lobe. Sternite IX (Fig. 75) elongate, elliptical, widened at middle, with both extremities rounded; moderately long setae disposed on distal fifth. Tergite IX (Fig. 77) transverse, moderately narrowed to apex; distal margin strongly and widely notched at middle; emargination surpassing half of tergite length; punctated larterally near base; tergite X elongate, slightly narrowed apicad; inserted at tergite IX apex; distal margin rounded; distal area microspined.

Aedeagus (Figs. 79, 80): basal piece small, wider than long, narrower than parameres. Parameres separated, very wide, narrowed laterally on basal fourth and distal third; emarginate at midline on distal half; distal region very narrow with one dorsal and one ventral seta; median lobe wide, gradually narrowed on basal 2/3 (excluding basal struts); apex rounded.

Etymology. The specific epithet is a derivative of “Sergipe”, state of Brazil where the material was collected.

Remarks. H. sergipinus is easily recognized especially by its rugose elytral apex and very wide aedeagus, with parameres strongly narrowed laterally at base and at midline, on basal half. Additionally, antennomeres II and III almost of the same size, tarsal claws widened at base forming wide angular tooth and lateral carina of pronotum incomplete.

Distribution. Brazil: Sergipe.
