= Maytenus lagoensis Warming (1880: 365) , syn. nov. Type:— BRAZIL. Minas Gerais: Lagoa Santa, s.d., Warming s.n. (holotype C! [F neg. 21242]).

Maytenus lagoensis was described by Warming (1880, p. 365) as a new species, but with a level of uncertainty [‘ M. Lagoensis Warm. , sp. nova (?)’]. He presented a description, but did not provide comments about the new taxon. Examining it, the illustrations presented, and the photo of holotype, no substantial differences between M. lagoensis and M. gonoclada could be detected. Both have young twigs with carina, glabrous and chartaceous leaves with crenate margins, and inflorescences in long peduncled (up to 13 mm) ramified cymes. Carvalho-Okano (1992) reported M. lagoensis as a new synonym to M. gonoclada , but the publication does not constitute effective publication according to article 30.8, chapter IV, section I, of the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants (Melbourne Code) ( McNeill et al. 2012). M. gonoclada is a very common species of Cerrado vegetation in Central Brazil, especially in the state of Minas Gerais, where the type specimen of M. lagoensis was collected. The species also occurs in the Atlantic Rain Forest and rarely in the Amazonian basin.
