( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 , 5A, 5 View FIGURE 5. A C)

Galacantha subspinosa Macpherson, 2007: 23 , figs 11, 12, 55B.

Munidopsis spinosa . — Takeda 1983: 96, with fig.— Baba 1988: 168, figs 67, 68; 2005: 296 (in part) (not G. spinosa A. Milne-Edwards, 1880 )

Munidopsis rostrata . — Miyake 1982: 144, pl. 48, fig. 4 [not G. ros tra ta A. Milne-Edwards, 1880].

Material examined. AUSTRALIA, WESTERN AUSTRALIA: NMV J56403 View Materials , 2 males (cl. 24.0–27.0 mm), 2 females (cl. 28.0–32.0 mm), 1 damaged specimen (cl. 18.0 mm), Leveque L27 transect, 14°33.06–33.58´S, 121°15.36–16.56´E, 1021–1023 m, 4 July 2007 (stn SS05/2007/155) (acq. 025).

Type locality. Kei Islands, Indonesia, 836– 869 m.

Remarks. The material examined generally fits the original description of the species well, although the merus of maxilliped 3 consistently bears only 2 spines on the flexor margin (2 or 3 reported by Macpherson 2007). The absence of any spines at the end of the horizontal portion of the rostrum distinguishes G. subspinosa from other species of the genus known from Australia. It is distinguished from the morphologically similar G. spinosa A. Milne-Edwards 1880 by the straight (rather than convex) posterior margin of the mesogastric spine and the length of the first (anterolateral) spine on the lateral margin of the carapace which is less than 3 times the length of second (hepatic) spine (as compared to being more than 3 times longer in G. spinosa ).

Distribution. Philippines, Indonesia (Kei Islands), Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, southwestern Australia; 660–1191 m.
