Hoplophthiracarus illinoisensis ( Ewing, 1909) View in CoL

( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 , A–G)

Description. Measurements of specimen 1. Prodorsum: length 227, width 164, height 83; setae: ss 63, in 83, le 13, ro 15, ex 15; notogaster: length 429, width 308, height 278; setae: c 1 81, c 1/ c 1– d 1=0.7, h 1 88, ps 1 78; genito-aggenital plate 114 × 78; ano-adanal plate 177 × 101. Some measurements of specimen 2. Prodorsum: length 215, height 91; notogaster: length 429, height 252.

Material examined. Two specimens: Philippines, Samar Island, Western Samar Province, 5584—Sitio Napatuo, Barangay Osmeña, Dolores Municipality, 21.X.2003 (W.Sm. Gruèzo), sample of secondary forest litter.

Remarks. Characters which distinguish the semicosmopolitic species Hoplophthiracarus illinoisensis ( Ewing, 1909) from others are the following: general shape of sensilli, length and arrangement of prodorsal, anal and adanal setae, length and shape of notogastral setae, arrangement of genital setae, length of setae h of subcapitulum, arrangement of setae on femur I.

The specimens from the Philippines are slightly different from specimens from the Palaearctic ( Niedbała 2011). Sensilli are more fusiform, vestigial setae f 1 are situated posteriorly of h 1 setae (versus anteriorly), genitoaggenital and anoadanal plates are covered with concavities (versus punctated). The differences between the specimens from Philippines and from China ( Liu et al. 2011): head of sensilli are more fusiform and not rounded distally, setae c 3 of notogaster are arranged as far of anterior margin as setae c 1 (versus as far as setae c 2), vestigial setae f 1 are situated posteriorly of setae h 1 (versus anteriorly).

The difference in shape of head of sensilli is very slight. The differences in the arrangement of setae c 1-3 and location of vestigial setae f 1 belong to a normal variation also shown in other species of Phthiracaroidea.
