Phanes tavola Schaus, 1902

Phanis tavola Schaus : Kaye (1940, no. 404a), Barcant (1970, no. 534) [based on TL], Cock (2013a) [not a Trinidad species]

Evans (1955), and hence Cock (1982), treated the Trinidad subspecies of Justinia justinianus as J. j. tavola , which was described from Trinidad ( Schaus 1902). However, having examined the type specimen, O.H.H. Mielke (in C.G.C. Mielke 1994) reported that tavola had been misidentified by Evans (1955) and was another species - the one that Evans treated as Phanes hoffmanni Bell , which is restricted to Brazil and not found in Trinidad. Accordingly, Mielke concluded that the type specimen of tavola must have been incorrectly labelled as from Trinidad.

Philibodes chittara Schaus : Barcant (1970, no. 545) [misspelling of genus; type locality error]

Schaus (1902) described this species from Trinidad, and Kaye (1940, no. 414A) added it to the Trinidad list. Mielke (2004) finds that it is a Brazilian species, and that the type must have been mislabelled ‘Trinidad’.

Corticea noctis (Plötz, 1882)

Mielke (2004) considers that P. ctyanus is a synonym of Corticea noctis from southern Brazil, and that the Trinidad locality label of the type is an error.

Callimormus radiola radiola (Mabille, 1878)

Callimormus radiola (Mabille) : Williams and Bell (1931)

Cock (2011) overlooked this record in his treatment of Callimormus . Since there have been no subsequent captures, it is considered unlikely to be a resident Trinidad species, and probably a misidentification for C. alsimo .

Although Kaye (1904) included C. edda in his first list of butterflies, “a single specimen only in June 1898 (W.J. Kaye)”, he did not include it in subsequent lists, so he probably concluded that this was a misidentification ( Cock 2012).

I have seen no specimens of this species from Trinidad, and Evans (1955) does not report it from Venezuela or the Guianas. The record of Mnasitheus simplicissima by Williams and Bell (1931) from Port of Spain, 12 Jul 1927, was overlooked by Cock (2013a). However, the treatment by Godman and Salvin (1893 –1901) in which the adult and male genitalia of Methionopsis ina are illustrated as Mnasitheus simplicissima ( Evans 1955) indicates that all these records are probably in error for the common M. ina ( Cock 2013a) .

Wallengrenia otho (J.E. Smith, 1797) ophites (Mabille, 1878)

Although several authors, including Smith et al. (1994), Brévignon and Brévignon (2003) and Warren et al. (2014) have treated W. otho ophites as a valid species, Mielke (2004) lists it as a subspecies of otho , and I have located no subsequent publication establishing the split into separate species. It is only known from Trinidad from a single specimen, and needs confirmation as a Trinidad taxon ( Cock 2007). Given that this species is usually common in the Lesser Antilles, it seems unlikely that this is a Trinidad resident.

Saliana chiomara (Hewitson, 1867)

Thracides chiomara (Hewitson) : Williams and Bell (1931)

Evans (1955) transferred this species to Saliana . Williams and Bell (1931) recorded a male from Port of Spain, 12 Jul 1927. I have not seen this specimen and overlooked this record in Cock (2003a). Since S. chiomara occurs in the Guianas ( Evans 1955) and Venezuela ( Bell 1946), there is no reason why it might not occur in Trinidad, nor a priori to doubt this record. On the other hand, there have been no further records, and this identification predates Evans (1955) revision and the description of several new species in this genus.
