Description
Wintergreen perennial or annual, amphiphyte; aquatic state with laminar leaves only (nymphaeid), terrestrial state with laminar leaves only. Shoots prostrate, creeping or floating, up to 50 cm long, glabrous, green, rooting at the nodes, internodes of the middle part of the shoot shorter than petioles of adjacent leaf, internodes of the upper part of the shoot shorter than peduncles. Laminar leaves present, opposite, 2–26 mm long, 3–32 mm wide, reniform to circular, with 3–7 primary lobes, dissected up to 1/2 of the lamina, primary lobes narrowest at base, secondary lobes 7–11(–15), margin entire or crenulate, basal sinus of the lamina 0–120°, glabrous; petiole 12–78 mm long, 3–6 times longer than lamina. Intermediate leaves absent. Capillary leaves absent. Stipules less than 1/2 adnate to the petiole, apex of free part rounded, glabrous. Peduncles 15–60 mm long, equal or shorter than petioles of opposite leaf, straight, glabrous. Sepals 5, 2–4 mm long, ovate, greenish, reflexed, caducous. Petals 5, 4–7 mm long, obovate, white with yellow claw, not contiguous in anthesis. Nectar pits 1 per petal, lunate. Stamens 5–13. Carpels 15–67, 1.5–2.2 mm long, obovate, glabrous, style terminal, caducous. Receptacles subglobose, glabrous.—Chromosome number. 2n = 16, 32.
