Description
Summer green perennial, rarely annual, hydrophyte; aquatic state mostly with laminar and capillary leaves (batrachid), terrestrial state caespitose with rigid capillary leaves. Shoots of aquatic state up to 100 cm long, often hairy, greenish to yellowish, rooting at lower nodes, internodes of the middle part of the shoot longer than adjacent leaf. Laminar leaves present or absent, alternate, up to 12 mm long and 15 mm wide, reniform to semicircular, with 3–5 primary lobes, deeply dissected, primary lobes broadly to narrowly cuneate at base, secondary lobes 7–11(–13), margin crenate or dentate, basal sinus of the lamina (30–)90–180°, hairy; petiole up to 30 mm long. Intermediate leaves sometimes present, either with both basal and apical capillary segments ( ashibetsuensis - type) or with narrow rounded lobes ( baudotii - type). Capillary leaves present, alternate, 20–40 mm long, obconical to suborbicular, green, hairy, segments subrigid, divergent, middle part equal to the lateral ones, length between first and second bifurcation 5–10 mm, number of the lamina divisions 3–5(–6), number of final segments up to 60–100; petiole 10–20 mm long. Stipules more than 1/2 adnate to the petiole, apex of free portion obtuse, hairy. Peduncles up to 50 mm long, slightly curved, glabrous. Sepals 5, 2–3 mm long, ovate to ovate-elliptical, greenish, sometimes purplish, spreading or reflexed. Petals 5, 4–10 mm long, broadly obovate, white with yellow claw, mostly contiguous in anthesis. Nectar pits 1 per petal, lunate. Stamens 5–15. Carpels 10–20, (1.0–) 1.5–2.1 mm long, obovate, hairy, style lateral to subterminal, caducous. Receptacle subglobose, pubescent.—Chromosome number. 2n = 32.
