Description
Annual or summer or wintergreen perennial, hydrophyte; aquatic state erect-spreading with capillary leaves only (myriophyllid), terrestrial state caespitose with subrigid capillary leaves. Shoots up to 40 cm long, diameter 0.3–1.5 mm, glabrous, pale green, rooting at all nodes, internodes of the middle part of the shoot longer than adjacent leaf. Laminar leaves absent. Intermediate leaves absent. Capillary leaves present, alternate, 10–35 mm long, obconical, green, glabrous, segments extremely fine, flaccid, the ultimate ones very long, narrowing outwards, middle part equal to the lateral ones, length between first and second bifurcation 3–10 mm, number of the lamina divisions 2–4(–5), number of final segments up to 80; petiole 3–18 mm long. Stipules for more than 2/3 adnate to the petiole, glabrous, apex rounded. Peduncles (10–)20–30(–50) mm long, thin, curved, glabrous. Sepals 5, 2–3 mm long, ovate, greenish, sometimes blue-tipped, spreading, caducous, rarely persistent. Petals 5, 3–4.5 mm long, ovate to slightly obovate, white with yellow claw, not contiguous during anthesis. Nectar pits 1 per petal, lunate. Stamens 4–10(–13). Carpels 5–15(–25), 1–1.5 × 0.7–1.2 mm, obovate, pubescent, style subterminal, caducous. Receptacles subglobose, hairy.— Chromosome number. 2n = 16, 24, 32.
