Valid name: Epomophorus gambianus (Ogilby, 1835) ssp. crypturus (Peters, 1852) fide Bergmans (1988, 1997), Boulay and Robbins (1989) and Koopman (1993 a).
Lectotype (designated by Andersen 1912: 537): ZMB 10080 (formerly ZMB 553 View Materials ), body in alcohol, skull extracted, female, adult; “Tette” = Tete, Mozambique; collected by W.C.H. Peters, between 1843 and 1847.
Paralectotypes (same locality, collector and date as for the lectotype) : ZMB 10018-10020 View Materials , bodies in alcohol, skulls extracted . ZMB 10078 (skull) . ZMB 10081 (old number = 355), body in alcohol, skull extracted .
