Phyllorhina bicornis Heuglin, 1861

Heuglin, T. von (1861) Beiträge zur Fauna der Säugethiere N.O.-Afrika´s. Nova Acta Academiae Caesareae Leopoldino- Carolinae, 29 (8): 4, 7 [1–18].

Valid name: Hipposideros caffer (Sundevall, 1846) Lectotype (here designated): ZMB 2795 View Materials , body in alcohol, skull extracted, male; Keren [region], Eritrea; collected by T. von Heuglin, ex SMNS.

Comment: Two specimens were available to Heuglin (1861: 7, 18): “… das Exemplar, nach welchem die eingesandte Beschreibung gefertigt wurde, zeigt 11´´´ Schwanzlänge [= 24.8mm], das später gefangene 14´´´ [= 31.6mm]” [… the specimen on which was made the description, shows a tail length of 11´´´ [= 24.8mm], the latter one 14´´´ [= 31.6mm]]. The specimen ZMB 2795 View Materials is from Heuglin and was transferred from SMNS to ZMB. Although it was assumed that the second specimen remained at SMNS, no specimen can be found in those collections, nor, according to Barbara Herzig (pers. comm.), could any specimen of Heuglin’s bicornis be found at NMW. Apparently the specimen ZMB 2795 View Materials is the only one still in existence. According to the tail length (app. 31 mm) this is the larger “14 ´´´- specimen”, and should be the paratype . However, being the only specimen traceable, ZMB 2795 View Materials is here designated as the lectotype .

Valid name: Hipposideros vittatus (Peters, 1852)

Syntypes: ZMB 6312 View Materials , skin and skull, male . ZMB 86257 (old number = A 4269), skin and skull . ZMB 86258 (old number = A 4268), skull . ZMB 86259 (old number = A 4270), skull. All specimens were from Qua Mpala , Marungu, Democratic Republic Congo; collected by R. Böhm, 12 July 1883 .
