Redescription

Male ( Fig. 17 View FIGURES 17 – 18 ). Body length: 10.7–15.8 mm.

Colour patterns. Body yellowish brown; apex of femora blackish brown.

Head. Width 3.1–3.2 as long as distance between upper lobes of eyes; postclypeus with a transverse shining carina in front of transverse groove between tentorial pits; transverse groove between tentorial pits more or less straight in middle; distance between lower lobes of eyes 2.5–3.3 distance between antennal socket and lateral angle of postclypeus, and 1.6–1.9 distance between upper lobes of eyes. Antennae distinctly longer than body; apex of segment 9 reaching or beyond elytral apex; segment 3 as long as or slightly longer than scape, and distinctly longer than segment 4; segment 5 shorter than segment 6.

Thorax. Prothorax 0.9 as long as wide, widest at middle; sides rounded, with dense fine punctures and pubescence; disc with irregular rugae and dense, pale yellow hairs. Prosternum in front of coxae divided by a shallow transverse depression into two parts, with anterior carinate, more or less shining, and posterior with dense punctures and pubescence. Elytra 2.4–3.0 as long as shoulders, and 4.2–4.9 as long as prothorax. Metasternum with dense pubescence and sparse erect hairs. Hind femora 1.7–1.8 as long as prothoracic width.

Terminalia. Apex of ventral median lobe pointed and apex of dorsal lobe rounded; ventral lobe distinctly longer than dorsal lobe. Spined region of internal sac slightly longer than basal unspined region, divided into 3 sections: first section about 1/2 length of unspined region, with long simple spines; second section slightly shorter than first section, with fingershaped spines, and with a semicircular chitinous structure near third section; third section with a Yshape chitinous structure near base and with no spines ( Fig. 9 View FIGURES 9 – 16 ). Eighth sternite parallel at sides, with an ovalshaped membrane area in middle and dense simple microspines on ventral surface; apex Vshaped, with dense setae ( Fig. 10 View FIGURES 9 – 16 ). Eighth tergite rounded or slightly emarginate at apex, with dense simple microspines and multibranched spines on dorsal surface ( Fig. 11 View FIGURES 9 – 16 ). Parameres 1/6–1/5 length of tegmen ( Fig. 12 View FIGURES 9 – 16 ). Ventral apodeme without inner process between arms, stem longer than arms ( Fig. 13 View FIGURES 9 – 16 ).

Female ( Fig. 18 View FIGURES 17 – 18 ). Body length: 11.4–17.6 mm.

Antennae slightly longer than body; antennal segment 3 shorter or as long as scape. Width of head 3.0–3.4 as long as distance between upper lobes of eyes; distance between lower lobes of eyes 2.5–2.7 distance between antennal socket and lateral angle of postclypeus. Prothorax without punctures at sides. Elytra 2.8–2.9 as long as shoulders and 4.8–5.1 as long as prothorax.

Ovipositor. Paraproct baculi extending from about basal 1/3 to coxite; proctiger baculus about as long as paraproct baculus and 2.9 length of dorsal baculus. Length of stylus slightly shorter than coxite width ( Fig. 14 View FIGURES 9 – 16 ).

Spermatheca. Cshaped, gradually narrowed towards base. Spermathecal gland arising from about basal 1/3 of spermatheca ( Fig. 15 View FIGURES 9 – 16 ).

Eighth sternite. Nearly squareshaped, width 1.3 as long as length; length of needle 2.5–2.6 length of eighth sternite ( Fig. 16 View FIGURES 9 – 16 ).

Biology

Host plants are Nothofagus truncata , N. solandri , and N. fusca . About 90% of the adults were collected during December, January, February and March, 10% found in April, June, July and October and none in other months.

Distribution ( Fig. 49 View FIGURE 49 )

Widely distributed in northern South Island, especially in Nelson, Marlborough Sounds, Marlborough, Mid Canterbury, Buller and North Canterbury. Not distributed in the North Island.

Comments

This species resembles O. simplicicollis but differs by having the body yellowish brown; the transverse groove between tentorial pits straight at middle; antennal segment 5 shorter than segment 6; internal sac with long, simple spines, fingershaped spines and a semicircular chitinous structure.
