The Clinterocera scabrosa species group
Body small, usually shorter than 17 mm, black or dark gray; elytra flat, usually with white or beige tomentum on disc and/or lateral portion; terminal spiracle slightly convex; pygidium rounded; tarsi short and slender; apical tooth of inferior ridge of protibia large in male, small in female.
In northern China, these species are easily collected under stones near ant nests and from inside ant nests, but are difficult to find in south China forests. Most species are distributed in China, reported from Liaoning, Jilin, Beijing, Tianjin, Shandong, Jiangsu, Shanxi, Henan, Hubei, Sichuan, Chongqing, Yunnan ( Liu 1932; Chang & Shao 1980; Su & Gu 1986; Chen et al. 1990; Liu et al. 1997; Ma 1997; Wang et al. 1999; Zhang 1999; Ren et al. 2009; Krajčik 2011; Li et al. 2015); also found in neighboring Russia (Far East), Korea Peninsula, and northeast India ( Arrow 1910; Niijima & Kinoshita 1923; Medvedev 1964; Sabatinelli 1984; Kalinina 1989; Sakai & Nagai 1998; Kim 2001).
