Stem simple; capitula ca. 4 to 6, arranged in a raceme, solitary at end of peduncles; involucres 32–48 × 25–35 mm; appendages straw-coloured or mottled with brown; spine 4–10 mm long.

Taxonomic and distribution remarks: — Centaurea cataonica subsp. cataonica is endemic to the vicinity of Maraş (Kahramanmaraş) and Gaziantep, S Turkey ( Fig. 18 View FIGURE 18 ). It is differs from C. cataonica subsp. syriaca by having unbranched stem, fewer capitula, longer involucres and straw-coloured or mottled with brown appendages.

Chromosome numbers: —Romaschenko et al. (2004) and Askoy et al. (2016) reported the same chromosome number 2 n = 2 x =18 for Centaurea cataonica .

C6 Maraş (Kahramanmaraş): Maraş- Narli, 15 km from Maraş , 1–2 km beyond Çigli village , 775–880 m, 8 August 2001, Reeves et al. 2205 ( E!); Reeves et al. 2206 ( E!); 13 km Östlich- Maraş , in Richtung Narli, 650 m, 15 July 1973, Holtz et al. 00.689 ( E!); 10 km SE of Maraş , Basalt soil, forest Pinus brutia, M. Zohary & D. Zohary 2729 ( HUJ!) .
