Centaureae giganteae subsp. giganteae affinis , involucro ca. 45× 45 mm (nec 30–35 × (20–) 25–30 mm), appendicibus phyllorum breviter triangularibus (nec longe triangularibus), spinis terminalibus 2–5 mm (nec 5–13 mm) longis, pappis ca. 13 mm (nec 8–10 mm) longis differt.

Type:— IRAQ. Prov. Arbil: Qandil mountains between Shahidan and Pushtashan, 1000 m, 28 July 1957, Rechinger 11013 (holotype W!) .

Involucres convex at base, ca. 45 × 45 mm; appendages small, concealing a minor part of phyllaries, shortly triangular; spine 2–5 mm long; achenes ca. 8 mm long; pappus ca. 13 mm long.

Etymology:—The specific epithet is given in honour of Dr. Karl H. Rechinger who collected the subspecies.

Taxonomic and distribution remarks: — Centaurea gigantea subsp. rechingeri is a rare endemic to Arbil Province, NE Iraq ( Fig. 26 View FIGURE 26 ). It is distinguished from another subspecies by having larger capitula and smaller appendages.
