status

Dolocytheridea dilatata Damotte, Cabral & Berthou, 1990

Holotype: carapace, male, no catalogue number in original paper (plate 2, fig. 23) = SMF Xe 23554.

Paratypes: ‘about 10’ and no catalogue numbers cited in original paper, in fact 8. Paratype in original plate 2, fig. 22 = SMF Xe 23555. Paratype in original plate 2, fig. 24 lost. Six unfigured paratypes in slide SMF Xe 23556. Synonymy and taxonomic note:

1990 Dolocytheridea dilatata sp. nov. —Damotte, Cabral & Berthou, 82, plate 2, figs 22–24 [males].

1990 Asciocythere lusitanica Damotte, Ramalho & Rey, 1988 —Damotte, Cabral & Berthou, 82, plate 2, figs 19–21 [females].

2017 Asciocythere dilatata ( Damotte, Cabral & Berthou, 1990) —herein.

Confusion between males and females led to dilatata being described based only on males, see synonyms above. Herein, six female specimens of dilatata are added in slide SMF Xe 23557 as supplementary material for completeness of the record of this species. Female specimens figured in Damotte et al. (1990, plate 2, figs 19–21) are named as Asciocythere lusitanica . The generic placement is considered to be Asciocythere Swain, 1952 View in CoL , not Dolocytheridea Triebel, 1938 View in CoL , because the hingement in Dolocytheridea View in CoL is holomerodont with a very short median element whereas in Asciocythere View in CoL it is antimerodont-hemimerodont ( Swain 1952: p. 75) and is clearly antimerodont in this material. Moreover, the lateral outline of the Portuguese material matches that of Asciocythere View in CoL as figured by Swain (1952).
